Lower Shannon Farms : Robin and John Acton Fact Sheet Lower Shannon Farms is a grain, cattle, poultry, pigs market garden and a greenhouse operation located five miles north- east Lloydminster. History: The original farm was founded in 1926 and has been expanding over the last few years to include poultry, market garden, pigs and a new year around greenhouse facility. The Lower Shannon name originates from an area north of Sligo, Ireland, home to another family enterprise. Products: Beef: Our cattle are primarily Angus cross and all finished product are processed by either Diamond 7 Meats or Vermillion Packers. We do not use any growth hormones or corral cattle. The herd spends the summer months on our pasture east of the farm and in the winter months they are free to roam a wide area north of the farm. This practice promotes good health and hygiene. Poultry: When we refer to “Free Range Eggs” we mean “cage-less” chickens. Laying chickens have access to a “run” in summer and open barn in the winter. The meat birds, i.e. chickens and turkey are initially raised in an open-floor barn and later transferred to portable pasture pens. All birds are fed a wheat/barley/canola meal ration. Feed for the layers are supplemented with flax seed a well documented source of Omega 3. We do not use medicated rations or growth hormones. The chickens and turkeys are processed by Lakeland Poultry Processors, St. Paul. The birds are vacuum packed and frozen immediately to maintain freshness and quality. Eggs: We wash, candle (yoke inspection) and grade all of our eggs. Pork: Weanlings are kept in a open area for good health and hygiene. We do not use any medicated feed or growth hormones. Vegetables/Strawberries: Our outdoor produce includes potatoes, carrots, beans, peas, beets, corn, cucumber, dill, cauliflower, cabbage, peppers, strawberries and raspberries. The greenhouse will produce tomatoes (clusters and cherry), cucumbers (English and mini), lettuce, herbs, micro greens and peppers. All pesticide free. The greenhouse are designed and constructed to operate year-around using a bale fired furnace to minimize cost and environmental impact.
