Lower back injury seems to be very common in hockey and people - TopicsExpress

Lower back injury seems to be very common in hockey and people assume that this is due to bending forward. However,a lot of lower back injuries are caused by poor range of motion and excessive tension in the gluteal muscles (your bum). When the glutes are not working efficiently this means that other muscles, in particular the hamstrings and erector spinae, have to work overtime in order to compensate. This muscle imbalance means that one cannot perform to optimum levels and will often result in injuries. An effective technique for releasing tension in the glutes is to use a hockey/lacrosse/tennis balls. Place the ball underneath the muscle and roll on it until you feel a ‘trigger point’ (you will know you have found one when you are wincing!!). Rest on this point for about 20 seconds allowing the ball to take your whole body weight. Repeat on both sides. This short video below shows us another very effective stretch for the glutes. Take 5 minutes out of your day to increase your mobility and assist in your injury prevention. #MOBILITYISKEY #newbridgehockeyclub #mobility youtu.be/Qby3ZsiidMY
