Lower-income and less educated whites also have shifted - TopicsExpress

Lower-income and less educated whites also have shifted substantially toward the Republican Party since 2008. Fox News works. I think about the difference between education and intelligence and job training and I think about it a lot. I think about it because these three factors determine how you think and how you vote. The smartest man I know is a Tea Party Republican. He is witty and one of the quickest original thinkers I know. I dont think he forgets anything he reads. Im amazed by the depth of his erudition. He made a lot of money in his business and a lot of it rubbed off on two friends who were associated with him in that business. He is an expert on everything he knows. Like a dentist or a mechanical engineer, he has job training and intelligence. He can spell words Ive never heard. But he never lived abroad and he never got an education. So although he knows everything about what he knows and is very successful, his life-long reading program has been pretty well confined to the Wall Street Journal. If you have a friend like this, and you are lucky if you are a writer who does, do you ever ask yourself where their thinking would be today if, right out of high school, they could have had the benefit of two college years in the humanities? Just one course in sociology or anthropology might have been enough to let them see that there is more to life than being able to manipulate mathematical formulas or extract teeth or take advantage of the poor and aged. A year of study in Holland or Denmark wouldnt have hurt, either.
