Loyalty and Commitment, what does it mean today? Not a lot in - TopicsExpress

Loyalty and Commitment, what does it mean today? Not a lot in todays world. I personally think and require families to stay with commitment for the season , a fall or spring season. Anticipating more than that is too much. A commitment should be maintained for the season unless physical or mental abuse causes an earlier exit. Problem is that players and families do not live by any code that holds them accountable except their own code. When a player leaves a team prematurely for whatever reason do they think about the impact on the other players and their families? Is their circumstance so great that it should affect the other committed players. 99% of the time no. They think the grass is greener somewhere else. Programs across the country facilitate this jumping ship mentality by consistently recruiting people out of other programs and having a revolving door. I feel players should commit and organizations should commit to those players. Organizations that end the season with the nucleus that it started with are going to be better for the development of players and will better prepare players for the next level. Injuries happen as do scheduling conflicts so measures have to be taken to solve those issues. There are plenty of supplemental opportunities that exist where players can test the waters and obtain their goals, why should it be at the expense of the organization that is expecting their commitment. Ultimately organizations should always do what is best for their players and not be selfish when it comes to opportunities provided outside of their organization. It should be a two way street and everyone should be flexible in doing what is best for the players development. The older the players get the worse it gets as the win now mentality takes over. The Showcase world has everyone fooled and paying a ton of money not knowing if they are doing the right thing or not. Rawlings Stars and Stripes Program is one that looks to commitment to players and obtain that commitment back. This program works with existing facilities and organizations to supplement opportunities for their program. In every case the best interest of the player should be taking in to consideration and all parties working together to derive at a suitable plan and schedule that accommodates all parties. Can organizations work together? Sure they can, it takes mature professionals that have the best interest at hand and who are not insecure about exposing players to what is out there. Truth is players , coaches and parents are always learning and should always be willing to see what is out there and how it provides benefit.
