Loyd Dillon Today is the birthday of the great but comparatively little-know jazz guitarist Joe Pass (b. Jan. 13, 1929). Here in Charlotte, Im happy to report that the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art has a Joe Pass tribute concert in its/our near future. But back to Pass. Joe was of Sicilian descent. His birth name was Joseph Anthony Jacobi Passalacqua, which is why (smile) he called himself Joe Pass. For the first 3 minutes of this video, Joe is playing one of his own compositions. Solo. The next 11/2 minutes show Joe explaining to an interviewer some of the concepts of improvisation. Good stuff! Enjoy Joes Blues. On the birthday of Joe Pass.
