Loyd Dillon YouTube · Today is the birthday of yet another great jazz musician from the Carolinas (oh, we have been blessed with SO many!). This time its my and Brendas absolute favorite trumpet player/composer EVER -- John Birks Dizzy Gillespie (b. Oct. 21, 1917). Dizzy was born in Cheraw SOUTH Carolina but received a music scholarship to Laurinburg Institute in NORTH Carolina where he studied for two years and probably taught THEM a lot. Yes, I once met Dizzy, talked with him about religion (he was a Bahai) and about jazz, saw him perform live, and even carried his trumpet case from his car to the stage entrance at Ovens Auditorium here in Charlotte. I had been sent as a freelance reviewer by The Charlotte Observer. Somehow the Observer back then thought I liked jazz AND talking about it (smile). Yes, he played this world-famous 1942 composition of his ~ A Night In Tunisia. And yes, for me it was a night of euphoria..
