Lu has been substitute teaching a few days lately. She came home the other day, sat with the stunned, collapsed look of a woman whos done a stint at the nurses station behind the Western Front. Do you know what its like to look at a 6 year old child and think, Hes doomed? And then to look around and see 5, 6, 7 others? Lu is a brilliant teacher of children, one of those gifted naturals who just get children. Ive lost count of the numbers she has wanted to bring home. Lately shes been dreaming of impassable jungles, and snaking vines impeding her search for the groups of children who are out there, lost. At the school shes been working, there is no recess in the winter. Instead, she had 40 rowdy first graders crowded into a room. It was a rather nice day, and the sun was out, and she asked to take them out. No, she was told, they cant go out. The janitors get upset when the kids track the floors with playground residue.
