Lucasfilm has announced that the next Star Wars film trilogy will not take the books, comics, etc. into account, causing the Internet to break on a Ben Affleck is Batman?!? scale. To be honest, I think this should have come as a surprise to no one. I fully expected this to be the case--and I say that as someone who has written for that franchise. Expecting the new movies to take into account a ton of novels that the majority of moviegoers havent read would simply have been unrealistic, and too restrictive on the screenwriters. Plus, that starship already sailed years ago, thanks to the prequels and The Clone Wars cartoon, both of which unfortunately left wampa-sized holes in the Expanded Universe. I, for one, plan to simply enjoy the films for what they are or are not. The Thrawn novels, Dark Empire, Tales of the Jedi and the Archie Goodwin strips will always be there, and theyll always be fantastic, regardless of what happens next. (And really, it cant get worse than Jar Jar Binks... right?)
