Lucky’s Story 7 year old neutered male Corgi-Bassett - TopicsExpress

Lucky’s Story 7 year old neutered male Corgi-Bassett Mix Lucky was adopted from another shelter in September of 2006 when he was 6 months old. He was originally from Kentucky where he was owned by a soldier who was being deployed to Iraq; Lucky had nowhere to go. Lucky was living in a family for almost 7 years. He was described as an awesome family dog. He lived with cats and small dogs and he got along with bigger female dogs belonging to other family members. He was raised with children which were 2 and 5 years old when he was first adopted and he absolutely loved them. When the kids went to school Lucky accompanied them to the bus stop and visited with the other children. He was taken to the local dog park at least once a week. He was dressed up on the holidays and every year went trick or treating with his family. He slept in the bed and liked to cuddle up under the covers. He loved car rides he liked to sit on the back seat with his paws on top of the middle console. He was completely house broken and never had any accidents in the house. Then something tragic happened. Lucky started to act like something was hurting him. He became reserved and started hiding in a quiet computer room. One day the mom of the house found him in the closet and reached her hand in there to check on him. He bit her on the top of her hand. He was taken to the vet who said Lucky was having muscle spasms in his back legs which were causing him terrible pain. He was put on muscle relaxants and pain medication and things went back to normal. About 1 year later Lucky jumped off the couch while watching TV with the father of the house. He started yelping and could barely walk. He limped into the computer room followed by the father who pet him on his head. Lucky bit him on the arm and foot. He was then surrendered to the shelter, where staff brought him to a different vet, who took x-rays of his back and legs. This showed that Lucky had 2 slipped discs which cause his spine not to be able to bend the proper way. The vet thought that the likely scenario was when he jumped off the couch that the disk slipped, hit a nerve and caused horrible pain. He was put on steroidal medication for 30 days and there has not been incident since. Since Lucky has been at the shelter (about 8 months) he has not shown any type of aggression. He spends most of his time in one of the smaller cages so he doesn’t have to be on the cold kennel floor. He likes to go for walks and get out for some gentle play time with other small dogs. He’s got a plucky personality and loves treats (although we are trying to keep his weight in check to reduce the strain on his back). He’s comfortable, but doesn’t deserve to spend the rest of his life this way. Is there anyone out there with an understanding heart who can help this little guy? I have more pictures if you are interested...pictures of him with a hat on, with children, sleeping with a cat, a dog, etc. Just ask and they will be forwarded.
