Lucy Crowe’s Iole steals the show. She has a soprano with a clean “white” tone very much like that admired in trebles in English choirs. Her highest notes are completely pure and vibratoless and her runs are the most precise and effortless of the cast. She won increasing praise with every aria, but the sheer beauty and immense sympathy she brought to “My breast with tender pity dwells” brought down thunderous applause.
