Luis Suarez’s four-month ban from football for biting Giorgio - TopicsExpress

Luis Suarez’s four-month ban from football for biting Giorgio Chiellini has been upheld after the appeal was rejected by FIFA. The appeal, lodged by both the player and the Uruguayan Football Association, pertained to the sanctions imposed on the Reds striker - not the actual charge. The 27-year-old is on the verge of a £75million move to Barcelona, but the Catalan club will have to wait until the end of October to debut their new signing. However, both the player and Uruguayan FA can make a further appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport - and reports suggest the CAS could decide to suspend his ban until an appeal is heard. The punishment will not affect any transfer for Suarez, and he will be able to undergo a medical for Barca. As well as the four-month global ban, FIFA imposed a nine-match international ban plus a £66,000 fine. FIFA head of media Delia Fischer said: “The FIFA appeal committee has decided to reject the appeals lodged by both the Uruguayan player Luis Suarez and the Uruguayan FA, and to confirm the decision rendered by the FIFA disciplinary committee on June 25 2014 in its entirety. “The terms of the decision taken by the FIFA appeal committee were communicated to the player and the Uruguayan FA today.” Suarez apologised for biting the Italian defender six days after the incident, but previously claimed he simply “collided with Chiellini’s shoulder”.
