Lukashenka attacks deposed President Yanukovych for fleeing Ukraine – 17:34 By Dzmitry Ulasaw, BelaPAN Minsk, 26 March. Alyaksandr Lukashenka has criticized ousted Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych for fleeing his country following a popular uprising. In an interview given to Savik Shuster, the host of a popular talk show on Ukraine`s First National Channel, earlier this week, Mr. Lukashenka said that he no longer viewed Mr. Yanukovych as Ukraine`s president. In his most recent speech he said that he was alive and well and was the commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces. One can ask him at once where his army is, the government`s news agency BelTA quoted him as saying. The president should be with his own people however hard it may be. Even if they shoot at you and kill you tomorrow, this is your fate, he said. Mr. Lukashenka reportedly said that he could not recognize heads of state who revel in their power and then flee when the situation gets complicated. That`s why when people in [Ukraine`s Supreme] Rada say that President Yanukovych has avoided performing his duties and run off, what argument can one counter this with? he wondered. I denounce him as a friend. You can interpret my remark as you want, he added. According to Mr. Lukashenka, presidents should not act like that. If there`s no one to join you in fighting, take a shotgun and go there alone. You may get killed. All of us will die sooner or later. But neither your friends, nor your family, nor your sons will feel ashamed afterward, he was quoted as saying. The interview will be aired by the Ukrainian channel on March 28 at 8:30 p.m. Belarusian time.
