Luke 12:35 – 40 counsels us in a parable to be ready for Jesus’ return. Jesus our master warns us to be on the alert for His return at all times – and we have no idea when that will be. How do we stay ready – especially alert – for a surprise visit? Since we cannot live without sleep, Jesus must expect us to rest; so it must be in our preparations for His return that Jesus means by be ready. That is the secret, which is no secret at all. In the military, we keep a bag packed at all times so that we can be ready to deploy anywhere in the world on just a few hours’ notice. We start being ready for Jesus’ return by living in anticipation of His coming; by rising each morning expectantly and by going to bed prepared as well. We must know Jesus through the Word and prayer as well as we possibly can. Everything that we do must be focused on Jesus, centered on the Lord and intended to glorify our God. We do nothing without thinking about God first and offering ourselves to God through the work we do. We must fill as much of our time in the day as we can with Scripture and continual prayer. The more time we spend in the heart and mind of Jesus, the better we will know Him and be ready for His return. So be ready.
