Luke 13:4 Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them: do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others who lived in Jerusalem? 5 No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish. (ESV) We are inclined, or at least I am, to wonder why God allows evil things to happen. So youd think if there was anyone to ask who would have the answer it would be Jesus. But Jesus would not entertain those questions. They were theoretical, not personal. He was focused on the personal. He always brought it back to you. So to ask, as I have done, why the deaths of 26 people, most of them children, at Sandy Hook or why the evil murder of non-combatants in Iraq is far less important for me than to face the fact of my own death. The fact is we all die, young or old, good or bad. And what then? What about me? It only makes sense to think about the future. I want to have done the best I can with my children and grandchildren. I want to leave no open wound in any friendship. I want to leave no debts unpaid. But even those things are small compared to eternity. What about me and God? Lord, may I be be tight with you always, may I leave no unrepented wrong or uncompleted task, for I do not know the day or the hour. I want to be ready.
