Luke 15:11-32 And he said, “There was a man who had two sons. 12 And the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the share of property that is coming to me.’ And he divided his property between them. 13 Not many days later, the younger son gathered all he had... There is so much being said here, much of it wrapped in a culture very different from our own. Clearly, Jesus words are designed to shock. We think the kid is cocky and spoiled, but “I wish you were dead” is the thought Jesus is putting across. Beating and/or chasing the son from the house would be an expected response. This father actually divides it up. Then the son sells his share. This would hurt his father even more, letting everyone in the community know how he feels. The image here is not of a modern father who cashes in his pension and gives his son a fat wad of cash allowing the son to sneak out of town quietly. Oh no--there is nothing subtle or private here. This is the talk of the town and will be for many years to come.
