Luke 2:8-9 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will TOWARD men. Notice what the last verse doesnt say...it doesnt say Peace on Earth goodwill toward men as your Hallmark cards will read. This misquote has left many astray and wondering where is the peace on earth that Jesus was supposed to bring? But if one examines that scripture again they will understand that God is offering his peace through his son Jesus TOWARD man and those who would call on his name in believing will find the peace mentioned, the others who reject will not find peace and the world will always be is disarray until the second coming of our savior. The Christmas song called I heard the bells on Christmas day written by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow during the Civil war is an example of the wrong expectation do to a misquoted scripture, nevertheless God in his faithfulness opened Longfellows eyes that even though there will be bitter trials in life that He (God) is not dead nor does he sleep.
