Luke 8:46 But Jesus said, “Someone touched me; for I noticed that power had gone out from me.” When a teacher friend of mine fell ill, it was a very stressful time for her and the children she taught. She could no longer run after them on the playground or stoop down to read with them. And so when the time came for one of the many tests she had to undergo, I gave her a pocket prayer shawl. That’s a small, palm-sized triangle that has been lovingly knitted and then folded into the shape of a shawl. The nurse allowed her to carry it on her finger into the radiology center, and it gave great comfort. I think of the woman who had been ill for years approaching Jesus. She touches the fringe of his clothing, and she is healed! When she fearfully admits that she was the one, he praises her faith and sends her away in peace. I wish every prayer shawl had that same healing power. I am certain, however, that there is an invisible thread of love and prayers stretching from the knitter’s heart to the person holding the shawl. And that thread has its origin in faith in Christ Jesus.
