Luke 8:56 And her parents were amazed, but he charged them to tell no one what had happened. (ESV) Jesus used the strangest methods to get his message across. He cloaks his message in parables. He tells people he healed not to talk about what he did. And here he told the parents of this girl whom he raised from the dead to keep quiet.Thats not good PR according to modern marketing theory. Whats up? Perhaps Jesus is not interested in attracting curiosity seekers.Perhaps the miracles would only be a distraction. But that wouldnt account for his telling parables rather than speaking his message clearly and directly. Perhaps. But I think there is something else going on. Jesus is waiting for the Holy Spirit to draw people to him. When the Spirit does, people come not as the curious but as seekers. They come and will push through the crowd to sit at Jesus feet. They will go on to absorb and think deeply about what he says. And they will follow. Maybe Jesus is not so focused on the many as he is on those few. I think we make the mistake of putting on a show to attract people, and of course we can attract people. Offer free beer and brats. But those who are compelled by the Holy Spirit will come without the beer and brats. And they are the seekers. They will follow. Lord, may I be a follower.
