Luke here. Thoughts from the road: I find more and more that the best parts of this trip are the things I cant bring home. The things I cant truly show people, or make them understand. I try. I take pictures, and talk about my experiences, but those things always seem to fall short of explaining why this is so amazing. This is the thing: I can tell you that I see all the things that you miss in a car, but you cant understand what that means until youre standing at the side of the road listening to a little waterfall burble over the rocks. I can snap thousands of pictures, but they can never communicate to you the true magnificence of the Rockies, or the barren beauty of the cypress hills, or the shocking pale blue of a glacial stream. And then theres the ride itself - I cant communicate what its like to peddle through a stifling prairie afternoon, or a freezing mountain morning. Nor can I instill in you an appreciation for the depressed feeling of sitting at the bottom of a huge hill, or the feeling of victory when reaching the top of every one. I cant really explain how being so exposed allows me to enjoy the environment Im travelling through that much more, or how the curiosity and kindness of strangers can make all the strain and soreness from a hard day of riding suddenly small and unimportant. I guess what Im getting at is that you cant understand the truth of a place until youve really been there and experienced it, really felt it, firsthand. So I hope you enjoy the pictures and anecdotes I send home from the road, I really do - but what I hope most of all is that it inspires you to go out and have an adventure of your own. Just a thought.
