Luke says it so well ... Luke 6:37 embodies the way my Gma Hiatt led our family, during her life. Papa Pete repeatedly calls me Lavina Hiatt - he refers to my big boned build, ha, as well as how bossy I can be; yet, he knows that my toughness is skin-deep. That my words often do not reflect my heart; just a defensive reaction. I wish I had the pure heart and unconditional acceptance Grandma had. BUT, I do try and I do believe ... in no small part because of her. She was the strongest, yet most kind, person in my life. NEVER without a hug, even after someone broke her heart. She could see ALL SIDES. Most importantly, she BELIEVED in The Way ... she lived Luke. Grandma never abandoned my Dad, even on his worst day - she (for better or worse) would have NEVER gotten the tough love method. Even when many would have given up, she kept loving and believing and being right there with him - and, if Unc/Gpa anyone else tried to judge my Dad, LOOK OUT - Lavina was going to give you a lesson on lovin - and remind you about that plank in your own eye! Throughout her life, she continued to love my Mom as a daughter long after divorce. She accepted my Dads significant others, my Moms significant others. It was her job to LOVE - NOT JUDGE. The Hiatts of that generation had strong opinions, bad tempers and VERY bull-headed ... but while Grandma was alive, it was kiss and make-up ... through her, I learned that strong opinions and bad tempers might have a place, but not to the point of damaging bonds. And, brother, you love your brother ... Ask my Grandma - ask Luke. I am reminded of this scripture today for many reasons ... a friend said to me this morning .. Unfortunately, not all families are like yours ... like mine ... blood is NOT thicker than water for many. And it is easier to judge and abandon, than to accept ...even when it is perfectly hypocritical to do so. I am grateful for my family, blood AND FRAMILY. From a very young age, I realize that I have had nothing but BLESSINGS as to my FRAMILY ... and I have tested you!! Yall know who you are.
