Lure of the week The new Jackall Pompadour no comes in a smaller size of 66mm perfect for bass yellowbelly and cod these surface lures make a lot of noise and vibration with the fizzer blade at the back and the wings at the front it will attract a hungry fish from a great distance and makes it easy for the fish to hone in on in dirty water. New colours also available. Cooby dam Fishing has been good at cooby this week with plenty of yellowbelly being landed on all sorts of lures and bait trolling hardbodies around the rock walls and the bouyline hase been successful along with casting jackalls and spinnerbaits to the steep banks this has also attracted some nice size cod this week. For the bait fishing salt water yabbies have still been the number one choice along with live shrimp and blood worms depths of 17ft – 30 ft have been most productive. Somerset dam Somerset produced some quality fish this week with the bass nation tournament held there the lake took a real working and the results were some massive bass up to 3.2kg the schooling bass were hard to find but persistence paid off fishing at the one off fish here and there found that when it did bite it was big, hopping soft jackalls was the best technique to entice the big bass and it usually is also some nice yellow belly takin on the same technique soft plastics and tailspinner also had there success . somerset is on the improve and definitely a place to look at over the holidays. Macintyre river With cod season now open a lot of anglers are heading to the northern nsw rivers like the Dumaresq river and the Macintyre and only a week in to the season we have already seen some cracking cod caught from kayak and land based angler on all sorts of lures spinnerbaits being the number one choice along with jackalls. The water levels are low in the rivers and they have stopped the farmers from using the water rain is desperately needed for these rivers although the lack of rain has keept the rivers clean and helping the lure fisherman. Leslie dam Leslie is still fishing really well all through the dam the opposite side of the dam to the camping ground has been a great spot along with any areas that are holding rocks or snags out in the deeper water the yellowbelly are usually sitting in 2’s and 3’s so if trolling and you catch one circle back and work that spot a few times will usually see you catchin the other fish for the casting angler finding the structure on your fish finder is key even if there isn’t fish on the finder if you find some good lump or structrre on the bottom fish at it with soft jackalls or transams same applies for the bait fisherman try find something to fish at or use trolling as a searching tool to locate fish the drop you baits down. Cressbrook dam Not to many anglers testing cressbrook out there has still been a small window for edge bite early in the morning befor the fish head deep spinnerbaits have been the best for the edge. Once the fish have moved of the edge they have been hard to locate trolling the deeper water through the middle of the day has seen some good fish and fishing out from main lake points in the after noon with live shrimp or blades has worked well also. Coolmunda dam Still one of the most productive lakes at the moment some big cod have been reported casting big spinnerbaits in around the timbered areas cod are very territorial and casting a big reaction bait in around timber where they live is the best way to target them sometime it can take upwards of 10 casts on one snag to get the fish to bite so fish along really slowly working each tree as you go and keep your boat noise to a minimal. Yellowbelly have been by the numbers with trolling hard bodies and jackalls being the most productive way again working the area you catch one in will usually produce more fish. Gold coast Inshore there have been some nice mangrove jack takin up the Nerang and other river systems casting hard bodied lures around structured banks or docks this has also produced some big bream and flathead. Offshore the water temp is really high and its starting to bring the pelagic fish in still plenty of blue and black marlin around along with loads of dolphin fish trolling a spread of skirted lures is the best way to target these fish but a charted boat would be a good idea. Tip of the week With the holiday season here take in to consideration when choosing the lake to go fishing weather it’s a skiing dam or not and how busy the lake will be. boat traffic can hinder where in the lake you can fish and really stir up the lake. Fishing in this season is not like any other time in the year take extra precautions and be safe on the water.
