Luther Seminary serves as the home to numerous pieces of religiously inspired art, both in permanent and temporary installations. Several unique pieces by artists Mark D. Roberts and Denise Rouleau currently are on display at the seminary, including these on-loan installations in the Chapel of the Cross, located in Northwestern Hall. These crosses are constructed from vintage typeface cases, which were used to hold various lead or wood letters used in older methods of printing. The artwork is part of an ongoing collaboration between the two artists called “Art of the Catacomb.” Inside each section of the wooden cases, small clay-fired figures appear, inspired by the original underground Paris Catacombs, which serve as the final resting place for 6 million human remains. According to the duo, these pieces are intended to spark “questions about life, death and human nature.” Learn more about the artists and their work here. markdroberts.net/featdenise/art-of-the-catacomb#ad-image-2
