Luvernes Fall sports season wrapped up over this past weekend as sophomore runner Madi Schandelmeier placed second in the Minnesota Class A State Cross Country meet in Northfield, MN on Saturday. She led much of the race, but was caught in the final 800 meters. Madi finished with a personal best time, however, and was happy to grab the silver. Kudos, Madi! Ice is already in at the Blue Mound Ice Arena, and expectations are high for the Luverne high school boys team coming off last years first-ever appearance in the state tourney. The exposure in St. Paul last March, and their play, got them invited to kick off the 9th annual Wells Fargo Hockey Day Minnesota versus host team St. Paul Johnson at Holman Field near downtown St. Paul on January 17th, 2015. Organizers will construct a hockey rink on one of the runways with Apache helicopters serving as a backdrop. HUGE compliment to the job Luverne Hockey, the coaches, volunteers, and the players have been doing over the past few years to raise the level of play in Southwest Minnesota. Full story on Hockey Day here: wild.nhl/club/news.htm?id=728462&navid=DL|MIN|HockeyDay If you want to be a part of Luverne Hockey, even if you live in far-flung areas only Facebook can reach, you can order a bomber hat designed especially for the event. Will make a great gift for a Luverne alumnus or hockey fan. Coach Browns email information is listed on the photo. All proceeds benefit the Luverne Hockey program. This Saturday, Luverne will be a part of USA Hockeys Try Hockey For Free Day. Over 500 locations nationwide will allow youngsters to play some semi-organized hockey for FREE, there will even be some limited hockey gear on hand. Be sure your child wears warm mittens/gloves.
