Lycopene Slows Colon Cancer Growth by 56% and Reduces Risk in Humans: In this study, lycopene (found in tomatoes) was shown to reduce the growth rate of human colon cancer cells (HC-116) by 56% in vitro and induce programmed cell death in the cancer cells. And for the first time ever, researchers may have discovered how: it appears that lycopene disrupts the cancer cell’s ability to manufacture cholesterol—which is essential for their growth and survival. But does lycopene work in the real world? Yes, according to one recent study from Germany: those with high lycopene levels had 57% less risk of colon cancer compared to those with low levels. And in another study from Italy, those eating the most tomatoes had 50% less colon cancer and 60% less rectal cancer than non-eaters. In fact, that study found that tomato was the single most powerful vegetable for reducing colon cancer risk! So how much tomato should we eat for real health benefits? Try getting two servings daily (160 grams)—that’s how much the average Greek person eats (Greeks eat the most tomatoes in the world). Not surprisingly, the Greeks rate of colon cancer is half that of the USA. Tomatoes are great eaten on their own, or in salads, smoothies, sauces, stews, soups, or on the grill. And alkaline diet fans take note: tomatoes have nearly double the alkalizing power of pure lemon juice!
