Lyda and I were discussing the Minnesota Renaissance Festival and she mentioned that a British friend of her asked her if it was a re-enactment. We had a good laugh over that and I said that its exactly what youd get if you arranged to have a Renaissance re-enactment planned by ten-year-olds: its got fairies and jugglers and fun stuff to buy and jousting. And people in costumes and food stalls selling things like Ye Olde Soup-in-a-Bread-Bowl and Ye Olde Turkey Leg. Dont they have these in England? I said. I mean, they totally COULD have these in England. In fact, I think the impulse to do this sort of thing is pretty universal. The impulse, specifically, to dress, eat, and shop in the old-timey way that you will envision from movies and TV about this particular old-timey period, whatever it is. I am not criticizing the Ren Faire, FTR; its a lot of fun, its just recreation, not re-creation, KWIM? I know they do stuff like this all over the U.S.; do they have it other places? Because if not, someone ought to start it, I bet it would be a hit.
