Lyon Hall, Demopolis, Marengo county, Alabama. Built in 1850-51 by Yale educated lawyer George Gaines Lyon an his wife Anne Gaines (Glover) Lyon. Lyon Hall was occupied by two reclusive family members during my early life. The House and grounds was an overgrown enigma to many my age. The direct line of of ownership of the house by Lyons was altered by a steamboat fire on the Gardner which happened up the Tombigbee near Gainesville in the 1880s. Many of the family members died in the frigid water on a the journey that would have ultimately taken them to Mardi Gras in Mobile. One of the young girls was too sick to travel and would later become the mother of the elusive Lamar brothers that I knew. George Lamar left the house to the Marengo County Historical Society. The Society has stabilized the house and maintained many original aspects such as the original marble dust paint brought from New York via schooner and steamboat. Original items to the house took a couple of years to sort through.... The Marengo County Historical Society utilizes the house as it was intended; a place of entertainment and community. A couple of the pictures are NABS photos. Some of these are from the annual Mardi Gras Ball and the Christmas in the Canebrake house tours. Sorry for the long post.
