Lyonia Environmental Center plans nature hikes, classes Lyonia Environmental Center is planning a variety of learning adventures in July. Reservations are requested and may be made by calling 386-789-7207, ext. 21028. Free programs include: ● Tiny trekkers: 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, July 5. Children ages 2 to 5 will read a book about animals that live in shells, make a take-home craft, and take a short hike in Lyonia Preserve. ● Invasive animal species: 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday July 5. Environmental specialists will discuss invasive animals, how they affect native animals, and protective measures wildlife officers have taken to protect native species from these intruders. Participants can meet the center’s hedgehog and bearded dragon after the program. ● Vertical hydroponics: 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, July 12. Joe Sewards, an urban and residential horticulturist with the University of Florida/Volusia County Extension, will explain the elements of vertical hydroponics, a soilless growing method that requires little water and space. ● Make your own fossil: 1 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, July 12. Children ages 7 and up can make their own fossil during this workshop. ● Popcorn and a movie: 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday, July 13. Meet in the LEC classroom for a showing of the nature documentary “Earthflight.” Soar with countless birds across six continents and see the world from their point of view. ● Summer Science Saturday: 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, July 19. Join the LEC staff in conducting fun science experiments and exploring specimens under a microscope. ● Summer days, firefly nights: 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday, July 19. During this indoor workshop, LEC staff will explain why fireflies are in peril and explain how humans can help. ● Tiny trekkers: 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, July 26. Children ages 2 to 5 can read a book about a little boy who goes camping with his grandfather, make a take-home craft, and take a short hike in Lyonia Preserve. ● Back-to-school swap-o-rama: 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 26. Practice the three R’s – reduce, reuse, recycle – during this toy and clothing swap. Participants are asked to bring clean, well-maintained clothing of all sizes, shoes, accessories and toys in good condition to the LEC between 1 and 2 p.m. The swap will begin at 2 p.m. Participants will be given a ticket for each item brought that can be used to swap for the corresponding number of items. There is a limit of 10 items per person. Bring a reusable bag. If you are unable to participate but would like to make donations, drop them off at the LEC beginning Friday, July 25. Leftover items will be donated to charity. ● What makes a bird, a bird?: 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday, July 27. Learn about bird adaptations, then make a bird using available craft supplies. This program includes a fee: ● Ooze and goo: 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday, July 20. Children ages 5 to 12 will make floam, flubber and slime to take home. The $5 fee is payable by cash or check. Lyonia Environmental Center offers an insight into Volusia County’s fragile ecosystems through hands-on displays and computer-based learning modules. It’s part of the Deltona Regional Library complex at 2150 Eustace Ave. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday.
