M/V Galapagos Sky moved on to Fernandina Island where I undoubtedly saw the most interesting animal behaviour yet underwater. The Galapagos Marine Iguanas feeding. The iguanas arrived from the Ecuadorian mainland and soon found they had to quickly evolve in order to survive. No longer finding anything on the lava rock to eat, they learned how to swim and eat underwater. For this dive you sit in the bay waiting for the iguanas to head into the water where they will feed on the green and red algae. During severe El Ninas their species experiences catastrophic death since their systems cannot digest the brown algae. For a photographer this was great lighting as they feed around our lunch time however there is a lot of crud in the water and quite a challenge to get a clean shot. I absolutely love their expressions, I even got one grinning (or maybe that was a growl!).
