MABUM COMMUNITY PLEDGES SUPPORT TO ACC The people of Mabum Village, Mayatha Section in the Kholifa Rowalla Chiefdom, Tonkolili District, have expressed their determination to support the Anti-Corruption Commission in its drive to enhance transparency and fight corruption in rural communities. They made this pledge during a sensitization meeting organized by the Northern Regional Office of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Wednesday 26th March 2014 at the Mabum Court Barry. Speaking on behalf of Mabum community, one of the village stakeholders, Mr. Abdul Y.F Kabia who chaired the meeting recognized the positive strides made by ACC in taking the fight against corruption to rural communities. He said it was an opportunity for them in the rural areas to interact with the Commission and be enlightened on corruption issues. He appealed to ACC to embark on regular sensitization of rural communities. ACC’s Regional Manager- North Mr. Patrick Sandi in his address raised the hopes of the people of Mabum village by expressing ACC’s commitment in fulfilling its vision of a corrupt free Sierra Leone wherein the socio economic needs of every citizen would be met. He emphasized the Commission’s recognition of the importance of people living in rural communities in the fight against corruption and called for their support. Manager Sandi lamented that those living in the provinces suffer heavily from corruption because perpetrators of corrupt practices take advantage of the remoteness of rural communities to exploit them that was why the ACC was making serious interventions. The Regional Manager furthered that for the lives of citizens to improve and Sierra Leone to develop, it depends on the effectiveness of ACC that was why they must support the Commission. He called on the inhabitants of Mabum village to take up the challenge in fighting corruption in their communities. Manager Sandi frowned at the misuse of school subsidies and Girl Child funds by some Head Teachers and Principals which he noted was impeding the improvement of education in the district. He warned that those forestalling the success of the Free Health Care in the district would not be encouraged by ACC. He used the occasion to encourage those involved in corrupt practices to desist and do the right thing. He emphasized that if the fight against corruption is to succeed, they must be ready to resist, reject and report corruption. Speaking on the role of Mabum village in the fight against corruption, ACC’s Senior Public Education Officer Mr. Al-Hassan Sesay said the fight against corruption should not be left in the hands of the Commission but require collective efforts. He furthered that the engagement was meant to enhance their knowledge and understanding on corrupt practices in their communities and solicit support towards the fight. ACC’s Tonkolili District Coordinator Mr. Abdulai Saccoh explained the various methods of making reports to the Commission and protection for informants. He emphasized the Commission’s core values of confidentiality and entreated the people of Malone to stand firm against corruption. He however warned them against making false report which he said, constitutes one of the offences in the Anti-Corruption Act. Questions and answers session formed the high point of the meeting.
