MACEDONIA FOR MACEDONIANS What do we call a nation? – People who are of the same origin and who speak the same words and who live and make friends of each other, who have the same customs and songs and entertainment are what we call a nation, and the place where that people lives is called the peoples country. Thus the Macedonians also are a nation and the place which is theirs is called Macedonia. - George Pulevski, 1875 In 1903 Krste Petkov Misirkov published his book On Macedonian Matters in which he laid down the principles of the modern Macedonian nationhood and language. This book is considered by ethnic Macedonians as a milestone of the ethnic Macedonian identity and the apogee of the process of Macedonian awakening. In his article Macedonian Nationalism he wrote: I hope it will not be held against me that I, as a Macedonian, place the interests of my country before all...
