MADA Industrial Design students Rowan Turnham and Matthew Harding - TopicsExpress

MADA Industrial Design students Rowan Turnham and Matthew Harding have transformed a class project into a real product: the Exo Light Series. The Exo Series was designed to be reminiscent of engineered structures and uses light reflected from the fixtures various surfaces and edges to create a distinctive look. We created a prototype in our 3rd year Materials and Manufacturing class using plywood sheets and MADAs laser cutter, explained Rowan. Rowan and Matthew took their prototype to Australias Rakumbra Lighting, where the Exo Series design was refined and the manufacturing process transformed to use a jet stream of water to smoothly cut the fixtures multiple fins. Specially-designed star-shaped joiners enable the fins to be snapped together. Using this process, fixtures can be produced quickly in multiple shapes and colours and then flat packed for shipping and delivery. From the acrylic diffuser which softly spreads the light to the technical package that sits underneath the lower section of the light, every aspect has been carefully decided upon. Its been over a year since we created the initial prototype. The final product is really refined. amassdesign/exo-series/ matthewjohnharding/#/exo/ rakumba.au/exo-series/ artdes.monash.edu/design/news.php#!/design/news/mada-students-turn-class-project-into-commercial-product.html
