MADKHALI TRAITS 18 - ACCUSE ANY AND EVERYONE WHO REFUTES THEIR SCHOLARS AS A SLANDERER Abu Nasr al-Sijzi (died 444 A.H.) talks about an ancient polemical landscape - dirty tactics of “the end justifies the means” - in his “al-Radd `Ala Man Ankar a-Harf Wa-l-Sawt”: ومنها ما ارتكبه أهل الوقت منهم خصوصا من كان منهم من المغاربة وهو أن كل من يخالفهم نسبوه إلى سب العلماء لينفروا قلوب العوام عنه وقرفوه بأقاويل لا يقول بها ولا يعتقدها... “One of these [humiliations] is what some contemporaries have come out with, especially the Maghribis, that they ascribe anyone who opposes them to swearing at the scholars, [1] so that the hearts of the public feel hatred for him...” [1] meaning anyone who refutes a scholar for being biased or being a mouth speaker for the ruler or being a deviant then they accuse the one refuting as someone who slanders the scholars.
