MAESTRAPEACE - A Reflection of Healing and Empowerment The Womens Building Mural MaestraPeace in San Francisco This spectacular mural is a culmination of a multi-cultural, multi-generation collaboration of seven women artists, and a colorful work of art that sings to our community. The mural was painted in 1994 by Juana Alicia, Miranda Bergman, Edythe Boone, Susan Kelk Cervantes, Meera Desai, Yvonne Littleton and Irene Perez, and many helpers. Covering two exterior walls, Maestrapeace is as educational as it is inspirational and serves as a visual testament to the courageous contributions of women through time and around the world. The design of the mural is the end result of a year and a half of brainstorming and planning by a broad range of community organizations and individuals. The theme has many messages: the healing power of womens wisdom over time, the contributions of women throughout history, and the making of history by women from all corners of the earth. A few of the famous women included are Audre Lorde, Georgia OKeefe, and Rigoberta Menchu. In addition, female icons such as Quan Yin, Yemeyah, and Coyoxauqui lend a timeless and spiritual element to the design.
