MAGDALENE “…It was still dark… and Magdalene came to the tomb” Why did she do so when it was still dark? Looking for a comfort from a dead person? Showing her love for Jesus? Or just to fill the feeling of emptiness? I remember being struck by Magdalene’s great love for Jesus when reading these verses from John’s Gospel one morning when I was a novice. Such a lady as Magdalene declared to bring Jesus back, now a dead body, wherever he was. How come, Magdalene? But just to know that when people are in love, they think they can do everything in response to the call of love. But, then, Jesus said: “Do not cling to me…” The old view should be transformed. The whole life of Magdalene should be changed. No matter how much she loves him, she can’t accompany him on his journey around Palestine any longer. She has another mission to fulfil, a different one but from the same love for the same person. How many times do we feel the darkness in our lives? How many times do we experience losses, loneliness, failure,… in different dimensions of life? Darkness is part of any journey. Then from where do we get our strength? Who makes us stand up and continue? And then, each time, it seems that we have to look life differently. We get mature each time. We learn new things each time. It’s sad sometimes to depart. It challenges most of the time to begin again. Even each brand new day requires us some effort somehow. Be brave. We have companions whether it’s our family, our friends, our colleagues or The Invisible who never fails to be with us and encourages us along the way.
