MAGICAL CHERANGANY HILLS. Driving towards the Eastern horizon from Kitale town, the boiling pot of Kenyan Agricultural Produce, only means moving away from the hanging ambience and glamour of the mighty and beautifully extensive Tulwop Kony , later day Mt. Elgon. The road is only smooth few kilometers out of the bustling town but as you get deeper into Cherangany constituency, pot holed tarmac on repair takes charge, steering the whole sojourn into a rocking affair. Only one thing has over the years of this dishaertening journey kept travellers afloat, totally forgetting the misery and nightmare of having to cope up with many kilometers of this Government forsaken road, one sight that has never let down, the darling of this regions Eastern Horizon ; The Cherangany Hills. This is the magic that is the opposite side of Mt. Elgon. The land between Mt. Elgon and Cherangany hills is so expansive and fertile for anything, it covers thousands of square kilometers but once you stand at the peak of of these hill, the howling wind and the feeling of being taken up to heaven Nehemiah style makes you feel you can stretch your hand and say hi to the land of Matakwei, the infamous SLDF rule maker! Sometimes am forced to conclude that whoever named this mighty feature a hill got it all wrong, from the Mythical Kipteber to Chemurkoi, standing like a cow back overseeing Uasin Gishu county, these can only be rightfully termed as a densely mountainous region. Just as it gives birth to the sun every morning, bringing life to the peasant population lying immediately close to it, cherangany hills receives pale rays of the setting sun from its western counterpart - ME- giving it a look to behold in a condition my grandmother once called Assipo Chemkondoi. Back during our budding years, we, the kids born proximal to this mighty geographic magic used to know it as the end of the earth, and our mothers nodded to that, possibly because they failed to explain to us the contrary of it all. An altitude that can let you have a birds view of five counties through a whole body rotation can only be a mountains. A light cloud hangs above it, slightly pecking its face, that only means the gods are in control over us.
