MAIFEST REBUTTAL DEBATING WITH MYSELF In response to those who have pointed out that Ive been a bit hard on Maifest, I offer this ... Our forum is NOT one-sided. Therefore, we will entertain both sides of any article we feature. Recently, I underscored how disappointing the current Maifest Parades have been compared to yesteryear. While I still stand by my views, I also will concede that I came down fairly hard on Maifest in my personal anylysis. The reason I did crack the whip on Maifest is because i have spent my entire life (since age 16 when I began in media at KWHI) operating within the professional world of marketing and promotion. Evaluating things based on results from a professional standpoint is the only way I know to do things. Therefore --- I will allow that Maifest is basically a non-professional entity composed of amateurs and volunteers who can not be expected to attain the same results, or level of production, as a highly-skilled group of full-time marketing and promotional staff would achieve for, say --- something akin to The Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo, or The State Fair of Texas. Both of which I have been associated, among other things such as the Director/Promoter of The Harris County Fair many years ago. While it would be great if the same level of expertise went into Maifest, it is a fact of life that it is merely a Small Town community-run event. I get that. I appreciate that. Yet ... I know for a certainty that it only takes a few (actually, it only takes ONE) dedicated to making any event or function successful above and beyond the average. That I came down hard on Maifest only means I would desire to see it back to its full glory, vigorous and lively as it was in yesteryear. It is unfortunate that we now have a generation or two who have nothing to compare with the Maifest of today, because they simply were not around during its days of grand pomp and circumstance. That I grow old and long for the good old days and am saddened to see things of tradition watered down, weakened, shoved aside, torn down, or just plain forgotten --- is my personal flaw, I suppose. Perhaps the fact that some folk still attempt to keep Maifest alive counts for something. So, I will modify my assessment in that regard. However --- I still maintain that a little more effort and understanding of promotion would go a LONG way toward improving the Maifest Parade. More power to Maifest ... but ... it really does need to re-evaluate itself to see where and how things can be bolstered up. There ... hows THAT for being kinder and gentler? (It doesnt get any more conciliatory than that from me.) I am open to comments. COMMENTS --- NOT arguments. Only constructive things accomplish anything.
