MAINE MSEA-SEIU Local 1989, a progressive, statewide union representing 12,000 public and private sector employees, is seeking to hire a General Counsel. Representative duties of the General Counsel include: participating in general management of the union; co-directing the union’s Representational Services Department; supervising assigned staff; providing legal advice, either directly or with assistance from other attorneys, to union officers, members and staff on matters relating to the unions activities, including organizing, collective bargaining, contract administration and matters of union administration and governance; representing the union in arbitration, administrative and court proceedings; providing training to union leaders, stewards, and staff on legal matters; recruiting, supervising, or working with other attorneys hired to perform legal work for the union. To be qualified a candidate must: be licensed to practice law in Maine (or licensed to practice law in at least one other state and committed to apply either for admission to the Maine Bar by waiver or to take the next Maine Bar exam); have experience representing organized labor; have general knowledge of the labor movement; and have excellent oral and written communication skills.
