MAINSTREAM NUTRITION LIES (EATING A LOT OF PROTEIN IS BAD FOR YOUR KIDNEYS) Ultimately everyone is biochemically different and will respond better with individualized Macro-nutrient ratios. One thing I often suggest is more animal protein in the diet and often I get the response Eating a lot of protein is bad for your kidneys. A high protein diet has also been claimed to cause both osteoporosis as well as kidney disease. So what does the science really say? It is true that eating protein increases calcium excretion from the bones in the short term, but the long term studies actually show the opposite effect. In the long term, protein has a strong association with improved bone health and a lower risk of fracture (Refs 1&2) As for the kidney disease? Well studies don’t show any association of high protein with kidney disease in otherwise healthy people (Refs 3&4). In fact, two of the main risk factors for kidney failure are diabetes and high blood pressure. Eating a high protein diet improves both (Refs 5&6). Thus eating a high protein diet is associated with improved bone health and a lower risk of fracture. High protein also lowers blood pressure and improves diabetes symptoms, which should lower the risk of kidney failure. The Perfect Balance take - As with Fats, Id strongly suggest your proteins are as organic as you can afford, non organic protein sources these days are full of growth hormones, antibiotics, even other animals like horse nevermind a whole host of toxins. Rotate your protein sources as much as possible, and the more protein you eat, the more green vegetables and Sea Salt you will need to balance this. I find that people in the Uk have very limited protein sources (Beef, Chicken, Pork, maybe Tuna). There are hundreds of Protein sources out there from Elk and Venison to Buffalo or even, and perhaps unintentionally eaten Horse! Explore them all!
