MAJOR LEAGUE RECORD BOOK: WAR IN A SEASON Ive already posted on career wins above replacement (WAR for short) for hitters, so if you need to see an explanation, go back a few weeks. (In short, WAR measures how a player performs relative to free talent- like a regular AAA player.) To try to put this in perspective, Jason Kipniss 5.9 WAR in 2013 left him just shy of the top ten list for the whole American League, and did, in fact, put him in 10th place for WAR for just position players. No wonder he was named an All-Star! (Honestly, I cant wait to see what all the guys on this list can do in 2014!) 1 Jason Kipnis Covington 06-7 2013 5.9 2 Jason Kipnis Covington 06-7 2012 4.0 3 Jon Jay Staunton 04 2012 3.4 4 Dan Murphy Luray 05 2011 3.0 5 Jon Jay Staunton 04 2011 2.9 6 Dan Murphy Luray 05 2013 1.8 7 Dan Murphy Luray 05 2009 1.6 8 Jon Jay Staunton 04 2013 1.5 9 Dan Murphy Luray 05 2012 1.4 Yonder Alonso Luray 06 2012 1.4
