MAKANA Municipality Press Statement Office of the Directorate: Engineering & Infrastructural Services Enquiries:E.T. MYALATO 26thNOVEMBER 2013 WATER SITUATION AROUND MAKANA MUNICIPALITY Waainek Water Scheme: Dam Levels: ALL our dams are 100% full i.e. Settlers and Howiesonspoort Dams (Overflowing to Settlers Dam). 1. H’poort Dam – The plant is supposed to be running with one pumps (One pump on standby) and the one pump that was running has an electric fault (was struck by LIGHTLING) from Saturday storm (15th November 2013). During the past few days, we have been challenged with Electricity outages and an on/off running of the standby pump. Therefore, resulting to the Grahamstown West (CBD and surroundings) not having enough water (Low pressure and possibly none availability of water to the High Lying Areas). We have been sharing water between the Water Scheme (James Kleinhans and Waainek WTW) and pumping from the Old Town Filters water scheme (The pumping has minimum capacity to cope with the demand of Grahamstown West). At about 14h00 today (25th November 2013), we manage to start the motor at H’poortDam and we are pumping to Waainek WTW. o Reservoirs Levels – High reservoir (Situated at Waainek Water Treatment works) is very low currently and resulting to the following areas being LOW PRESSURE and/or NO WATER: the Correctional Services; Army Base;Craddock & Somerset Heights (Other high lying areas); and Intermediate reservoir. WHAT ARE WE DOING and/or GOING TO DO TO MINIMISE THE WATER SHORTAGE? - We have throttled off the outlet valves (High, Intermediate & Low Reservoirs) as to build water levels at the high reservoir for the communities to have water from 18H30 till 21H00. We will be closing the outlet valves from the reservoirs from the following times as to build the water level: - o Daily: Closing from 09H00 – 16H30 and running from 18H30 – 21H00. o Night: Closing from 21H00 – 03H00 and running from 05H00 - 09H00 every day until the situation is resolved James Kleinhans Water Scheme: • Dams Levels: Glen Melville dam is functioning well and James Kleinhans balancing is also full in capacity. • James K.
