MAKATI TOPS NATIONAL ACHIEVEMENT TEST FOR SECONDARY LEVEL IN NCR posted by : icrd on 08/02/2013 For the fifth straight year, Makati has ranked first in the National Achievement Test (NAT) for the high school level administered in both public and private schools in the National Capital Region (NCR) during school year 2012-2013, DepEd-Makati officials said. In a report to Makati Mayor Jejomar Erwin Binay, DepEd-Makati superintendent Dominico Idanan said the city earned the highest average rating in the NAT taken by fourth year high school students in the NCR, with an overall mean percentage of 60.45. Binay said he was very pleased with the impressive showing of Makati school students in the NAT, specifically students of the city’s public high schools. He said such achievements “serve to validate and reward the continuing commitment of the city government to providing the youth of Makati with quality education.” Makati has been consistently topping the NAT high school level in the NCR for the last five years, specifically SY 2008-2009, 2009-2010, 2010-2011, 2011-2012, and now 2012-2013. It also placed first in 2005-2006, and ranked second in 2007 and 2004. Based on the results released by the National Education Testing and Research Center (NETRC), the Schools Division of Makati secondary level ranked first among the 16 divisions in the National Capital Region with an overall mean percentage average of 60.45 in the five subject areas of English, Mathematics, Science, Filipino, and HEKASI/ Araling Panlipunan. Idanan said based on NETRC data, Makati’s secondary level fared best in HEKASI/Araling Panlipunan with a 70.93 percent average, followed by Filipino with 66.14 percent; English with 63.16 percent; Mathematics with 57.41 percent; and Science with 48.84 percent. “We are indeed happy and proud that our secondary level has been consistently topping the NAT since school year 2008-2009. We are even prouder because of the fact that they have improved in the three major subject areas (English, Mathematics and Science) from last year’s performance,” Idanan said. Compared to their performance the previous year, Makati’s secondary level has improved on its performance in Science from 46.35 percent to 57.41 percent, or an 11.06 percent increase; Mathematics from 42.75 percent to 48.84 percent, better by 6.09 percent; and English from 59.79 percent to 63.16 percent, or 3.37 percent higher. Meanwhile, in the elementary level, Makati placed third among public and private elementary schools in the NCR with a 64.78 mean percentage score, slipping from first place ranking last year. The NAT, administered by the Department of Education, covered all grade six and fourth year high schools in the NCR. It is an examination given annually to both private and public elementary and secondary schools nationwide. It seeks to assess the competencies learned by the students in subjects such as English, Filipino, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies and the results of the test are intended to guide DepEd in its efforts toward the improvement of the quality of education and to provide appropriate intervention for the students.
