MAKATI TRANSPORT AND TRAFFIC SUMMIT 2013 SET FOR OCTOBER 3 posted by : icrd on 09/19/2013 The city government of Makati will hold the Makati Transport and Traffic Summit 2013 on October 3 at the Makati City Hall to present its existing initiatives on transportation and work with concerned sectors in planning for new programs to ease traffic in the city. Mayor Jejomar Erwin S. Binay said that a new transport and traffic plan is crucial to establishing sustainable transportation, which is indispensable to promoting the city’s competitiveness and sustaining its growth and development. “The volume of traffic has increased much along with the increase in business establishments, tourists, shoppers and transients in the city. We have to address this unprecedented increase in traffic to ease congestion and make travel and doing business in the city more convenient for investors and visitors,” he said. Binay said the city government also needs to align its transport and traffic plan with the recently enacted Comprehensive Land Use Plan and Zoning Ordinance 2013-2023 that involve the expansion of the Central Business District. The Makati Transport and Traffic Summit 2013 is the next step after the 2004 Transport and Traffic Conference that resulted in the drafting of the Makati City Traffic Improvement Plan (MCTRIP) 2004-2010. MCTRIP served as the framework that guided the city government in the implementation of projects and management of traffic and transportation during the past years. “This year’s transport and traffic summit will consider the changes in the environment and vehicular movement in the city since the 2004 conference took place, as well as the use of green technology in transportation to lessen the burden that human activities have brought upon the environment,” Binay said. The summit program will include a review of the previous 2004-2010 Transport and Traffic Plan, as well as presentations on transport-related existing and future projects of national agencies (such as DPWH, DOTC, MMDA and DOE/ADB) for Metropolitan Manila, local transport-related initiatives, private sector initiatives, development partners and Civil Society initiatives, among others. Also to be tackled at the summit, themed “Green Mobility 2023: Moving Transport Development Directions Towards a Safer and Environmentally Sustainable Transport Goal”, during workshop sessions are future plans, programs and projects on the following aspects: Sustainable Urban Transport, Traffic Enforcement, Traffic Engineering, and Traffic Education. The summit will also feature an exhibit on transportation and traffic-related products and services, as well as technologies, such as the prototype of e-trike and hybrid vehicles, from various firms and companies , to be held at the Makati City Hall Quadrangle on October 3 and 4. The city government utilizes a participative-consultative approach in transport and traffic planning and includes various stakeholders from the national government and agencies, the private sector, business groups, transport sector, and other concerned groups. The participants, moderators, conveners and presenters of the summit will also come from different sectors, including city government officials and department heads, barangay chairperson and kagawads, national government agencies, highly urbanized sister local governments, organized transport groups, private sector proponents of mass transport projects, business community and private developers, local and international funding agencies, urban development and transport planners and consultants, members of the academe, concerned NGOs and civic groups, media firms, and public utility companies. The opening ceremony of the Transport and Traffic Summit 2013 will be held at the City Hall Quadrangle at 8:30am to be followed by the plenary session at the Session Hall, 22/F New Makati City Hall Building. The breakout sessions for the workshop will begin at 12:00 noon while the presentation of outputs at the Session Hall will begin at 4:30pm.
