MAKERERE CLOSURE: The government of Uganda has given Makerere University’s governing council a deadline of two weeks to re-open the institution following the latter’s decision to close it indefinitely on Wednesday. In a statement, the Minister of Education and Sports, Jessica Alupo, revealed that much as government is aware of the importance of motivating workers, the staff’s 100% salary increment demands are currently unaffordable. Alupo says that while government supports the council’s decision to close the institution, the council should take the necessary steps to ensure that the willing members of staff resume work in two weeks time. Meanwhile, a group of Makerere University students have today delivered a petition to Parliament in which they ask the government to ensure the striking staff’s grievances are dealt with so that business resumes as soon as possible.
