MAN HIT BY 110 MPH AMTRAK TRAIN, SURVIVES It was the first time in his 20-year career that LaPorte County Police Maj. John Boyd heard of someone getting hit by a train in such a way and surviving. “The conductor said it was a straight-on hit,” Boyd told the Northwest Indiana Times. “It was absolutely amazing,” he told NBC Chicago. “I’ve seen a number of people get hit by trains and it’s never a good thing." The victim was Darryle See, a 22-year-old Indiana man who was walking along the west-bound train tracks in Michigan City when an oncoming Amtrak train hit him at 110 mph. The Chicago-bound train reportedly sounded its horn several times, but See, who was listening to music with headphones, did not hear the warnings. What could have been a terrible fatality turned out miraculously well. See suffered only a few broken bones, despite being thrown over 20 feet from the track, after being hit by the train. Boyd confirmed that See was even conscious and alert when police arrived on the scene. "I never would have guessed he was the victim," Boyd added.
