MAN OF STEEL: (B-) This film is a pseudo remake of SUPERMAN II. If you love SUPERMAN II then this film may disappoint you. Overall, I like the new actor playing SUPERMAN as he is a bit more rugged and does not always shave. The visual effects are really well done especially at the beginning in the Krypton scenes. This is a conscious effort of the creators to make a SUPERMAN film that is like The Avengers with great effects, darker imagery, and hiring some real talent like Russell Crowe, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane and Lawrence Fishburne. The film has the villains from the Phantom Zone including General Zod and Ursula. The challenge for me is that General Zod does not have the visual presence or distinct voice like the original General Zod had. He is tall and thin and not threatening and does not sounding accent of the original. There are also lots of CGI space ships with tentacles for SUPERMAN to wrestle which makes this film too much like the metal monster shaped ships in THE AVENGERS. Basically, I like SUPERMAN to be bright and optimistic while I like other comic heroes to be dark. If you like Sci-fi and comic movies check it out.
