MANILA, Philippines - (UPDATE 2 - 5:11 p.m.) A youth representative wants the US to explain the presence of an unmanned aerial vehicle, or drone, found in Quezon province over the weekend. The drone, which had US Navy markings, was recovered by local officials of the island town of Patnanungan in Sitio Katakian on January 4, Sunday. The US embassy in Manila confirmed on Tuesday that the drone belongs to the US Navy and was used during military exercises in Guam. The Armed Forces of the Philippines issued a formal confirmation with US counterparts that the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) that was found by local fishermen off Polilio island in Quezon on Sunday (January 4) is a US Navy aerial target drone. The drone with serial number BQ55079 is a Northrop BQM-74E Chukar that is used to simulate enemy missiles and aircraft during naval exercises. This was used during US Navy exercises in the Pacific around the area of Guam and washed to our shores by the oceans currents and tides. We would like to assure the public that this type of drone is not a surveillance equipment contrary to the claims of some quarters. As of this time, there are no bilateral military exercises between the Philippines and the US that employ this type of training equipment. interaksyon/article/102432/lawmaker-wants-explanation-for-us-drone-recovered-in-quezon
