MANY QUESTIONS RAISED REGARDING THE PORT HEDLAND DEATH IN CUSTODY OF 22 YEAR OLD. A woman died after being taken to hospital for the third time while in police custody in the Pilbara, police have said. Police said the 22-year-old woman was arrested on Saturday and was due to be held for four days in the South Hedland police station lock-up. While in custody, she complained of being unwell on Saturday and Sunday and was taken to hospital both times, according to police. Police said medical staff issued certificates stating she was fit to return to custody. The woman complained of feeling unwell again on Monday and was again taken to Hedland Health Campus where she died. The police Internal Affairs Unit is investigating her death and a report is being prepared for the coroner. The WA Country Health Services regional director Ron Wynn said the woman was looked after properly. The tragic death of a young woman at South Hedland is currently the subject of a Police investigation and likely coronial inquiry, and it is improper for us to comment, he said in a statement. However, we can say that a preliminary review by Hedland Health Campus staff has shown that on each occasion she received appropriate treatment. Spokesman for the Deaths in Custody Watch Committee Marc Newhouse said he and the committee were disturbed by the incident. This person is very young and that raises a lot of questions about the circumstances of her arrest, he said. If any injuries were caused in the process, was she clearly unwell and if so, what medical attention was administered, when they were aware of that? Dennis Eggington, a deaths in custody campaigner and chief executive officer of the Aboriginal Legal Service, has called for a transparent inquiry. abc.net.au/news/2014-08-06/woman-who-died-while-in-custody-hospitalised-three-times/5652794
