MAN’S BEST FRIEND When I was young I heard old folks say That our pet the dog is man’s best friend Of all the things I’ve heard and read No truer words were ever wrote or said And from their very early human touch They’ve helped mankind so very much In far too many ways to mention here The best among them joy and cheer How could our loving canine friends Have descended from the fierce wolf When from most dogs it is love we see Nothing fierce could these friends be Think about the many dogs you’ve had Who were loyal at all times good and bad That greeted you with love so faithfully At dawn and dusk and through the day So many breeds we have come to know And the mixed breeds so many of us own Our dog friends now come in many forms With love and loyalty their enduring norm To countries or religions they are not loyal It’s the master’s yard and house that’s royal If they get loose and join a wayward pack You don’t see them fight or muster an attack I think if men would treat their women The way their dogs love and worship them I would bet that many rocky marriages Would soon be soothed and on the mend And if the women would treat their men With love and affection like man’s best friend How might his habits change with such a gift What he most desires no longer just a wish And if people of all countries and religions Adopted the manners of man’s best friend The reign of endless turmoil in this world Might finally find it’s just and needed end
