MAPOLY teachers reject new rector, want due process followed THURSDAY, 26 SEPTEMBER 2013 FROM CHARLES COFFIE GYAMFI, ABEOKUTA FEATURES - EDUCATION THE Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY) chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has rejected the appointment of a new rector for the institution, on the premise that the state government did not follow due process in appointing him. The state government had, last week, appointed Prof. Bamidele Itiola as the substantive rector, after approving an alleged request by the immediate past rector, Mr. Tokunbo Fowode to embark on his terminal leave. The union, in a communiqué issued after its congress on Monday, endorsed by the Chairman, Olawale Adetunji and the Publicity Secretary, Oyerinde Abiola respectively, asserted that “only the Governing Council, empowered by the Edict establishing the polytechnic, can appoint a rector.” It continued: “There is an existing agreement between the union and the government, that rectors shall only be appointed for the polytechnic from within the polytechnic sector. Contrary to the established procedure, there was no advertisement requesting for applications for the post of rector; nor was there any appointment interview.” The lecturers further observed that it was the aspiration of every worker to attain the apex of his or her career, just as it was the right of every academic in the polytechnic sector to aspire to become a rector. It further declared: “The National Policy on Education clearly shows that the operations of the polytechnic sector differ from that of University sector.” The congress resolved that the appointment of a rector outside the polytechnic sector was unacceptable, insisting that a proper governing council should be put in place as a prelude to the commencement the process for the appointment of a rector.
