MAPUSA: With the aim to decongest Mapusa town, the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC), during a special meeting on Wednesday, agreed to build a multistorey parking structure in Mapusa. The parking facility is to be set up opposite Alankar theatre. During the meeting, 14 councillors of the 15-member council supported the proposal for setting up the multi-storey parking facility raised by MMC chairperson Sandip Falari. Locals complain that Mapusa is getting more congested by the day and is bearing the brunt of haphazard parking. There are always traffic jams at every junction in Mapusa. "Congestions in the city because of traffic is a serious issue. There are always traffic jams near Alankar theatre, as there are three hospitals situated there. Hence, we intend to set up the multistorey parking facility there," Falari said. The facility will come up on 47sq m of land, which was earlier meant to be a garden. The facility will have six levels, with four car parking provisions on each level. It will be a mechanized facility and will take approximately 90 seconds to park a car. There will be a single point entry and exit to the parking structure. The total cost of the project will be 60 lakh. The municipality has provided 46 lakh from various grants lying at its disposal. The MMC will build the facility utilizing those funds, and the other 15 lakh will be taken from the municipal fund. A private operator will be appointed to run the "self-sustaining and revenue-generating" project. "As per a survey, we expect a revenue of 15-20lakh per year, which means the project cost can be recovered in four years," Falari said. If things go according to plan, the proposal will see the light of day in six months.
